Paul Collingwood’s daughters wanted http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c749 to lose - ICC World Cup 2011
While England fought against the West Indies in their must win match of the ICC World Cup 2011 on Thursday, 17th March at Chennai, the whole nation prayed for the Poms to win. However, there were two girls in England who wanted their team to lose the match. These girls were none other than the daughters of star all-rounder Paul Collingwood.
Kiera and Shannon Collingwood wanted their father to be back home soon, and while talking to him they said, “We hope you lose tomorrow, daddy. Then you can come home.”
However, Collingwood told his daughters that if England went on to win the game he would buy them more Barbie dolls, which convinced the young girls to pray for England’s win in the upcoming matches.
England have had a mixed tournament until now and were in danger of being knocked out of the mega event in the group stages. The Poms did well against stronger opponents like http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747.
Commenting on the close game against the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760, Collingwood stated, “It has been very emotionally draining. There were times in the match against West Indies when we thought we were down and out of the World Cup. We've gone from despair to euphoria in the space of 20 minutes.”
The veteran all-rounder credited captain Andrew Strauss for the success and said that the left-handed opener was a mentally tough guy. Strauss recently led his team to victory in the Ashes series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 in 2010. Considering that performance, England looked like one of the favourites for the Word Cup.
However, things changed significantly as some of the key players’ sustained injuries, denting the confidence of the team. The most important thing for England was that their captain didn’t panic under pressure and kept his cool.
The next challenge for Strauss and his men will be against hosts Sri Lanka, who will be their opponents in the quarter-finals on Saturday, 26th March. The match will be played at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
The visitors will have to play their best cricket to beat http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 in front of their home crowd.
