Paul Daley signs contract with Strikeforce
Strikeforce has announced the signing of welterweight fighter Paul “Semtex” Daley to a six-fight contract. Daley, a top 10-ranked fighter, is expected to make his debut under the Strikeforce banner sometime before the end of 2010.
Paul Daley was unceremoniously released from the Ultimate Fighting Championship promotion in May 2010. After his three-round fight with Josh Koscheck at UFC 113, when both fighters stood after the final bell, Daley landed a sucker punch to the face of Koscheck.
At the post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White did not hold back with his comments, “He’s done, I don’t give a s*** if he’s the best 170 pounder in the world, he’ll never come back here again. There’s no excuse for that. You don’t ever hit
a guy blatantly after the bell like that, whether you’re frustrated or not. It was probably one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen.”
Daley has had two fights since being released from the UFC. In July, he submitted Daniel Acacio at Impact FC 2 in Australia. Last week, while fighting for Shark Fights in Texas, he was victorious via unanimous decision over Jorge Masvidal, another recent
signing to Strikeforce.
Daley is an impressive striker; in fact, the victory over Masvidal was the first time since 2006 that he had won a fight on points. All 13 of his victories since that 2006 unanimous decision win have come via knockout, technical knockout or submission.
Daley described his style, “I am a striker, there is no secret about that. I like to knock people out aggressively and quickly.”
Upon his signing to Strikeforce, the 25-9-2 Daley had this to say, “I’m looking forward to fighting for Strikeforce and would really love to fight (current Strikeforce welterweight champion) Nick Diaz. He’s a big name and a great fighter. Diaz would bring
out the best in me and would be a great test.”
