Paul Deacon of Wigan Warriors hangs up his boots- Rugby League
On Tuesday, October 11, Paul Deacon confirmed his retirement while speaking with reporters and acknowledged that the move has been one of the toughest decisions of his life.
The news about Deacon’s retirement from his on-field role, came along side his confirmation with Wigan Warriors as a memeber of the coaching squad.
The 32-year-old had joined in with Wigans two years ago, after spending a 12-year stint with Bradford, exhibiting his skills as scrum-half. He had no idea that this move will also have him slip on the coaching hat after just spending two years with his
home town club.
Deacon has inked a three-year-deal at the club, which will see him working under the new head coach, Shaun Wane, and his assistant Iestyn Harris.
While talking about one of the most difficult decisions of his life, Deacon said, “It was up there with one of the biggest decisions of my life but I thought about it for a long time and I believe I've come up with the right decision. It might have been
a hint from Michael Maguire. It puts a few doubts in your mind - you wonder if you are good enough - but I knew deep down it was the right time to finish. If I'm being true to myself, I think if I had gone around another year I would have regretted it."
Deacon’s stay at Warriors was initially intended for just a year, which was extended by a year more 12 months ago. The scrum-half was brilliant all along, with a total of 51 appearances to his credit. However, during the recent play-offs , the player lost
his on-field position, which had served as an alert for him in reaching the decision of hanging up his boots.
His previous record is studded with a total of 2,609 points for his long-term club, Bradford, where he had the rare honour of making 326 appearances, along with the 5 successive Engage Super League Grand Final appearances.
