Paul Goldschmidt shines as Arizona Diamondbacks defeat San Francisco Giants 3-1 - MLB Update
Arizona Diamondbacks’ first baseman, Paul Goldschmidt had a remarkable day with the bat as he hit two RBIs and went 1-for-3 with an average of .255 in the Diamondbacks’ 3-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants at Chase Field, Arizona on September 23.
The pitchers limited the batters in the first four innings. Giants’ right-fielder Carlos Beltran drove towards left-field but Justin Christian fouled out to short-stop position and Jeff Keppinger ground out. Brett Pill hit a grounder into fielder’s choice
to third base but Beltran got out to second base during the first inning.
Similarly, Aaron Hill tripled to deep left-centre but Miguel Montero and Justin Upton both struck-out while Ryan Roberts flied out without adding any run to Diamondbacks’ score-card at the bottom of the first inning. Chris Young and Gerardo Parra both popped
out while Goldschmidt flied out during the second.
At the top of the fourth inning, Pill singled off centre-field but Brandon Belt ground out to the pitcher. Mark DeRosa hit a grounder into double play, second to short-stop position and short-stop to first base but Pill got out at second base. On the other
side, Upton struck-out while Montero and Goldschmidt both flied out at the bottom of the fourth.
Giants’ manager, Bruce Bochy said, “We are breathing. Five games left, we are still breathing. That is why there is no need to talk. We've still got baseball.”
Speaking to interpreters, Matt Cain said, “They are a team that really does play until the end. They find different guys each night to spark plug the offense.”
In the fifth inning, Orlando Cabrera hit a one-run homer (395 feet) towards left-field to give the Giants a 1-0 lead. Diamondbacks’ starting pitcher, Joe Saunders threw seven innings and was able to strike-out only one batter with an ERA of 3.58. He permitted
nine hits, one run, one home-run and one earned run on his 83 pitches.
Diamondbacks tied the game 1-1 during the seventh inning when Goldschmidt scored a single run on the drive of Young to deep centre-field. The batters added two runs for Arizona at the top of the eighth and gave them a 3-1 lead. Roberts and Upton both posted
two consecutive runs when Goldschmidt hit a triple-run drive towards deep right-field.
As a result, Diamondbacks led off the three-game series 1-0 against the Giants at Arizona.
