Paul Hembery of Pirelli discards criticism for 2011 Formula 1 season tyre compounds – Formula 1 news
The lone tyre suppliers of the 2011 Formula 1 season, Pirelli’s boss Paul Hembery recently ruled out the criticism his company received a couple of days ago.
According to some rumours, the new Pirelli tyres were not as long lasting as they are expected to be and it was believed that the teams will likely opt for a 2-3 pit strategy depending on the venue but rumours suggest that the teams might even have to go
for a 3-4 pit strategy.
However, Paul disagreed with these rumours and stated that the statistics show that this is not true and the tyres are obviously not as long lasting as the Bridgestones of 2011 since the FIA wanted Pirelli to do so in order to make racing more interesting.
Other than that, it has been revealed that the hard/soft compound combination has been chosen for the initial four races mainly because of the fact that there is a serious problem with the medium and super-soft tyre compounds. It is believed that the super-soft
tyres are pretty good for a single run and they wear out completely after that which is not useful at all for the teams.
“Well, someone will be winning, and will not be heard complaining even once. The others will complain because that's where they would like to be. We have already seen in the testing that some are able to get more out of the tyres than others. But that is
part of the game,” said Paul.
Since the 2010 Formula 1 season did not have interesting pit strategies as most of the teams opted for a one-pit strategy which became quite predictable as a result, the FIA wanted this change. Paul believes that he will give this change to the sport in
2011 and Formula 1 will now be even more unpredictable and dramatic.
“The teams and Bernie Ecclestone wanted there to be two stop races again, with us producing the tyres for that. That's what we've done, and now the teams are faced with the challenge of making the most of it, especially in terms of strategy,” Hembery added.
Other than that, the Pirelli boss believes that they are aware of what they are doing and it is intended to be this way. They hope to bring something new to the table and they believe that they have achieved a unique set of tyres which is going to take Formula
1 to an even higher level.
The 2011 Formula 1 season is going to be pretty exciting and it is going to be interesting to see how the teams plan their strategy this time especially during the first four races of the season.
