Paul Hembery says one-stop unlikely in Canada, hopefully more overtaking than Monaco – Formula 1
Pirelli motorsports director Paul Hembery has ruled out a one-stop race in the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Hembery added that despite the fact that Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel won the race in Monaco on almost a one-stop strategy due to the squeezed streets of Monaco, the story in Canada will be different.
Already Pirelli is becoming the backbone of Formula 1 racing and more so for overtaking. Hembery hopes that in Canada, Pirelli will deliver something special as well.
Talking about the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix he said, “The characteristics of Canada mean that we're unlikely to see a one-stop strategy this weekend, but we're hoping that the racing will be just as close and that the opportunities for overtaking will
give teams even more possibilities than Monaco in terms of race strategy.”
Hembery added that three different drivers with three different strategies were able to put up a good show in the Monaco Grand Prix but come Canada, many pit-stops will be seen.
Talking about the Monaco Grand Prix and a special run from Sebastian Vettel on prime compound, Hembery said, “From the data we can see that Sebastian Vettel's tyres would have gone the distance if he had continued to drive on them in the same way.”
Hembery added that had there not been the red flag in the final stages of the race, Vettel could have done 62 laps on prime tyres which would have been amazing.
The German was able to survive his top position from Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button who were on fresher set of tyres.
In the last few laps of the race, the Spaniard was going faster than Vettel but the German was able to hold on to his position courtesy the tight nature of the Monaco track.
Nevertheless, the Canadian Grand Prix is next on the 2011 Formula 1 calendar and it will be interesting to see what strategies do the teams opt to run on the Montreal circuit.
