Paul Hembery says that they are still unsure about the compound choices – Formula 1 news
Paul Hembery of Pirelli says that they are trying to improve the performance of tyres in wet conditions however, they have still not decided what type of compound tyres they will be using.
Talking about the changes Pirelli had introduced during the German Grand Prix practice session for testing reasons.
Hembery said, “Going forward we have a couple of areas we want to improve. We want to improve our wet tyre for example and bring it closer to the intermediate so that it works better in the wetter conditions, that's something we're working on. We're always
working on improving the little bits of blistering that we get now and again with overheating on the shoulders. But in terms of structure and compound choices we're undecided.”
Hembery added that they do not want to give teams an added challenge in season 2014 because as the engine will be changed, changing the tyres can result in a challenge for the driver and can thus create difficulties.
“If we did continue in 2014 maybe we would take the opportunity ourselves to do something more dramatic,” he said.
Moreover, he said that if Pirelli got a chance to continue in 2014, it will try to bring some remarkable changes in the tyres.
During the German GP Pirelli tested hard compound tyres because the weather conditions were expected to be dry during the weekend. The teams were offered to use hard compound tyres during the practice session if they wanted to however, the new compounds
were not introduced because Pirelli did not want to be unbiased because the competition between teams is very close.
Earlier the testing of tyres was scheduled to be done during the British Grand Prix but it was not tested during the practice because it started raining at Silverstone and hard compound are designed to be used at wet circuit.
They are of the view that changing the compounds at this time of season can be advantageous while for the others it might not be. Therefore the tyres are expected to be introduced in the next 2013, season.
Currently Pirelli is offering six types of tyres which include hard, medium, soft, super-soft, intermediate and full wet compound tyres to be used in accordance to the driving conditions.
