Paul Hembery thinks criticism on Pirelli is highly unjustified – Formula 1 news
Pirelli motorsport director, Paul Hembery has said that the criticism which they have faced in the 2013 Formula 1 season until now is highly unjustified.
After the terrible incidents of tyre explosion in the British Grand Prix, the Italian tyre company has been immensely criticised by the drivers and other teams’ officials. Nevertheless, Pirelli came up with stronger rear tyres in the German GP to ensure the safety of everyone in the sport. Furthermore, they have planned to come up with new tyres with 2012 construction from the Hungarian GP onwards to avoid any unpleasant event in the future.
Hembery has said that they could not make the necessary changes in their tyre compound before the British GP because of which the dreadful incidents took place. However, he stated that they have received enormous criticism over their tyres which is unjustified and has made many of their board members unhappy. In addition, he said that there is no accountability to hold any person responsible for his acts in F1 and people are not paying attention to the bigger picture. He also asserted that there is too much self-interest involved which is against the very spirit of the sport.
“I think for a large part of the season and let's take out Silverstone from that - then we feel it's been very unjustified a lot of the comment and it's made a lot of people unhappy,” Hembery said. “People have wanted to use our name and sully our name for their own personal gain and that's unacceptable. But anybody seems to be able to say anything today in Formula One, there's no check and balance, people aren't looking at the bigger picture and there's too much self-interest.”
Nonetheless, he expressed that they are working very hard to do their job in the best possible way. He also insisted that they want to stay in F1.
“We’re trying everything we can to do the best job we can but we'll be around,” he added.
Additionally, he stated that they have been involved in Autosport for 110 years which is longer than any team in F1. He also said that are looking forward to stay in the world of motorsport for another 100 years.
