Paul Konchesky targets England call-up
Liverpool full-back Paul Konchesky has said he is eager to earn a call-up to the English national team from manager Fabio Capello.
Konchesky made two appearances for the national team during Sven-Goran Eriksson's reign as manager, but has yet to be called up by the Italian, who took charge of England in 2008.
Steve McClaren, who coached England during their Euro 2008 qualifying bid, also overlooked the former Fulham player, who was signed by Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson this summer.
"I want to do my best for Liverpool first and if I can do well here, and then the England chance comes, then that's a big bonus for me," the 29-year-old told the official website of his new club. "But my first aim is to do well at Liverpool and try to win
something here."
Konchesky, who plays alongside Capello's preferred right-back Glen Johnson at Liverpool, added that he needs to deliver consistently for his club in order to earn a place in the national team.
The defender has appeared once in the Champions League and three times in the Premier League this season.
"The England manager can pick who he wants to pick. I don't let that bother me when I'm playing, and hopefully I can now show him what I can do here with Liverpool."
Eyes Liverpool improvement
With six points from seven games, Liverpool are in dire need of better performances in the league. The club has lost three of its games and collected only one win. Two weeks ago, the club crashed out of the league cup to Northampton.
Despite the team's recent form, Konchesky insisted that better results await for the team. "I've always got to be confident, and if I'm doing well and the team's doing well, you never know what's going to happen."
Liverpool face Everton in a highly anticipated Merseyside derby after the international break.
