Paul Konerko shines as Chicago White Sox defeat Chicago Cubs 3-2 – MLB Update
Chicago White Sox first baseman, Paul Konerko had an amazing day with the bat as he went 2-for-3 and hit one RBI including a one-run homer in the White Sox 3-2 victory against the Chicago Cubs at U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago on June 21.
After this convincing win, the White Sox were able to tie the three-game series 1-1 against the Cubs.
In the first inning, the Cubs’ batters got out due to their sluggish shots as Reed Johnson was flown out to centre-field and Starlin Castro grounded out to first base. On the other side, the White Sox batters also failed to deliver some runs. Juan Pierre
was grounded out to first base and Carlos Quentin flied out to centre-field at the bottom of the first inning.
The White Sox took a 1-0 lead when Konerko struck a one-run homer (425 feet) towards left field. In the third inning, the White Sox got a 2-0 lead when Pierre hit a sacrifice fly off the pitcher and Alex Rios posted a single run.
Konerko said, “It's still way above a regular-season game. You still have that pump up from these games, it's not like a run of the mill game. That's the way it goes. It's no big deal.”
Fourth inning remained score-less without any contribution of the batters as they played lazy shots and got out. The pitchers threw superbly and controlled the runs. The White Sox starter, Mark Buehrle threw just over five innings with an ERA of 3.73 and
gave just two runs on five hits including two earned runs. He struck-out three batters and did not permit any walk on his 70 pitches.
The Cubs added their first run of the game during the fifth inning and reduced their lead 2-1 when Carlos Pena hit a solo homer (425 feet) to centre-field. The game levelled 2-all in the sixth inning when Johnson contributed a single run on the sacrifice
fly of Aramis Ramirez towards left-field position.
During the seventh inning, the White Sox batters took a single run and went ahead 3-2. Brent Morel hit a sacrifice fly off centre-field and Ramirez added the leading run to the score-card. The last two innings went in favour of the pitchers as they did not
give away even a single run to any batter.
