Paul Konerko’s dominant performance helps Chicago White Sox beat Seattle Mariners 5-2: MLB Update
Chicago White Sox’ first baseman Paul Konerko had a notable day with bat as he added a tie-breaking run and went 5-for-5 in the White Sox’ 5-2 victory against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field in Seattle on May 8.
Konerko said of his game plan, “Five minutes before the game, it slid out while I was in the cage. It goes in easy and goes out easy. When it's there, it's a pain.”
The first three innings were scoreless for both sides. The White Sox got their initial two runs in the fourth inning when Konerko made a double towards the left-centre field position and posted a run on the shot of Ramon Castro, who went 1-for 5. The Sox led off with 2-0 at the end of fourth inning.
On the other side, the Mariners missed some opportunities to score a run when Ichiro Suzuki did not play the batted ball well and the ball hit on his foot. But during fifth inning, Brendan Ryan hit an RBI single on which Jack Cust and Jack Wilson completed two runs to tie the game 2-all.
Ryan hit a shot towards the third base in the seventh inning, but was unable to score a single run as the ball struck on the left leg of umpire Mark Wegner. The scoreboard did not move from sixth to ninth inning so an additional inning was given to both teams. The White Sox’ batters contributed three runs in the 10th inning to take the lead 5-2 for their club.
Alexei Ramirez drove a shot while Brent Morel added a single run in the 10th inning. Konerko singled at the end to complete the three run campaign. The Sox’ starter Mark Buehrle was economical right through the game as he threw eight solid innings and gave away just two runs on nine hits including two earned runs with three strike-outs.
After this convincing win, Buehrle said, “Luck may be turning our way, too. It could have been first and third in the fourth with one out but instead the ball hits Ichiro. Then on the ball down the line it hits the umpire. Hopefully, things keep turning our way.”
The Mariners’ starter Brandon League was too much expensive as he permitted 10th innings’ three runs to the White Sox in just 1 1/2 inning pitched.
