Paul Lawrie aims to improve Ryder Cup standing at Spanish Open
Paul Lawrie will play the upcoming Spanish Open, aiming to improve his position on the Ryder Cup European Team Points List.
He is currently standing at the 5th position, and has ample chances at the Spanish Open. Prior to the Spanish Open he wants to improve his game, which is why he is getting ready for the 2012 edition of the Ryder Cup.
The 43-year-old Scottish professional golfer will play his eighth tournament of the current season. He can easily make it to the Ryder Cup European Team, if he maintains his performance till September.
"Today has been great fun", Lawrie said on Monday. "Four-thirty alarm to catch the 6.40am flight to Heathrow, then onto Madrid. I missed the connection to Seville by 15 minutes, next flight seven hours later. Aarrgghhh - the joys of travel eh?"
He has a chance to improve his position, as four of the top-5 players are not playing the Spanish Open this week. He is all alone and can earn impressive points, which will definitely help him for the European Team selection.
Rory McIlroy holds the first position of the European Team Points List. Peter Hanson is on the second, followed by Martin Kaymer on third and Justin Rose on fourth position.
Lawrie could also impress the European captain, Jose Maria Olazabal, while playing the initial two rounds with him on Thursday and Friday.
He is likely to see a tough fight from Alvaro Quiros, Francesco Molinari, Simon Dyson, Anders Hansen, Miguel Angel Jimenez and the defending champion, Thomas Aiken.
There are three ceremonies this week. The European Tour celebrating its 40-year anniversary, the 100th edition of the Spanish Open, and the third not so celebratory, the first death anniversary of the famous Spanish golfer, Seve Ballesteros.
"The Spanish Open is very special to all of us Spanish players and I would love to have a victory in the tournament in my career," Jimenez said.
"It's a big week because of everything that is going on and of course. We will all have our thoughts about Seve and how we miss him, but we will have to also try to keep our minds on the tournament and try to do our best to win".
