Paul Lawrie and others want Seve Ballesteros on the new tour logo
The last Scottish player to win the US Open, Paul Lawrie was the
first one to suggest the addition of Seve Ballesteros' picture in the new
European Tour logo.
The famous golfing legend, Ballesteros passed away early Saturday after losing his battle with brain cancer. The player had been diagnosed with brain cancer in 2008 and underwent four operations to remove the malignant tumour.
Lawrie, an active member of the European Tour, suggested that the famed picture of Seve Ballesteros winning the 1984 Open should be incorporated in the new logo. What the tour members had initially planned was to add the picture of Harry Vardon. The tour
had also paid to develop the picture of Vardon, who is a golfing icon who has won The Open six times in the early 1900’s. The logo was supposed to be launched along with the Race to Dubai in 2009.
Where the officials didn’t put Ballesteros in focus then, with the player not being alive anymore, the change should definitely be made.
“Seve is the reason why we are playing on the European Tour, and everyone would have that opinion, so I fully agree with it,” said Lawrie. “Of course, it's not for me to tell the Tour what to do. The current logo is a nice logo and it's been
very well done. But everyone knows and agrees that Seve was the player that
really started it all for the European Tour. He was the difference.”
Being the amazing player he was, Ballesteros won 87 tournaments worldwide.
The player won five majors in his playing career. Claiming two green jackets
and three US Opens, the player retired in 2007.
Starting golf when he was only sixteen years of age, Ballesteros is the perfect symbol for struggle and passion. Using his talent and playing with an unmatchable devotion, he has embedded himself in the hearts of many people worldwide.
Even though Ballesteros is not alive anymore, he is still admired and loved by many. His fellow tour members feel the need of him always being there with them. Despite what the players want, it is up to the authorities whether the logo will include Ballesteros
or not.
