Paul Lawrie eyeing the top with opening 69
The highest position in terms of score at the Qatar Masters might currently be in possession of Spaniard Fernandez Castano but Paul Lawrie is all set to battle it with the three-under-par round of 69 that eventually left him to settle at the fifth position.
"I could taste today's round so much and I've just got dust and sand everywhere and in places where I didn't know you could get sand," admitted Lawrie.
He continued, "It was blowing so much and you couldn't see very far. I played nicely again and drove the ball well. I'll have to say I left a few chances out there but then a 69 is a good score".
It was with the help of four back-to-back birdies that helped Fernando get hold of the top position.
On the other hand, John Daly, who was the last name in the news for making shots that landed in the lake, was this time able to score a commendable 67, just two points down to Lawrie.
The 45-year-old-American acknowledged that the weather conditions in the course made golf a rather brutal task to accomplish.
Another worth mentioning point in this aspect is the performance of Australian Jason Day.
The player after remaining runner-up in both last year's Masters and US Open could only clinch the third spot by scoring 68.
Major shocks and jolts were also obtained in the form of Graeme McDowell and American Hunter Mahan, both of whom were able to score only 73 and 74, respectively.
It was, however, Thomas Bjorn who turned out to be the surprise package for many. Even after a decade long entrance in the sport, the Danish was still able to score a 79 in the event.
Hence, in all Qatar Masters has turned out to be a surprise package for many.
Among the many who were being expected to deliver a superb performance rather failed to entice their fans, whereas a relatively new breed of golfers was able to unveil its talents in the golf course.
Players like Fernandez and Daly belong to a similar category.
