Paul Lawrie loses the Volvo World Match Play Championship, but still wants to play the Ryder Cup
Paul Lawrie is still confident to make it to the Ryder Cup, even though he faced a defeat in the final round of the Volvo World Match Play Championship.
The 43-year-old Scottish was striving to win the glory of the European Tour event. He aimed to win the title, so that he could ensure his presence in the European Team of the Ryder Cup.
He was eliminated in the semi final round on Sunday. He is not losing hope, after losing the event, for the Ryder Cup. His performance and competitive behaviour was impressive at the Finca Cortesin, Casares, in Andalucía, Spain.
“I’m not thinking about that as there’s a lot of tournaments still to be played.” Poulter said “If I get in the Ryder Cup, it would be the biggest achievement of my career, so that’s the motivation”.
He started the tournament on Thursday, played against Peter Hanson and grabbed the first round win by 2&1. He delivered the best strokes and also was the most appealing player.
Then in the second round, he performed in the morning session and faced Camilo Villegas. They both were motivated and competing against each other professionally.
Both the players delivered their best and the round ended in a draw. This situation created many chances for both the players to amaze the officials in the upcoming rounds.
In the final round, another interesting round was played between Lawrie and Thomas Bjorn. It was again a tough battle and Lawrie grabbed success at the end of the day. Their scores were 5&4.
After winning in the third round, Lawrie moved to the quarter finals and competed against Retief Goosen. Lawrie performed well and successfully defeated Goosen by 6&5.
In the semi final round on Sunday, Lawrie set foot the Spanish course and faced Nicolas Colsaerts. He started the round in an impressive style, however, Colsaerts defeated Lawrie amazingly.
That was the most appealing round played in this event, as Colsaerts fired all his efforts to be in the finals. After facing a defeat, Lawrie was eliminated from the event.
“They way I’ve done my schedule is the best for me. You can’t really ask for more than that,” Lawrie said. “The wind really picked up and under par you are going to be tough to beat”.
After losing the event, Lawrie is still hopeful to record good scores in the upcoming European Tour events, so that he can be among the 12-man Ryder Cups’ European Team.
