Paul Lawrie striving hard to be in the Ryder Cup’s European Team
Paul Lawrie is striving hard to qualify for the European Team of the Ryder Cup, by displaying some of the best performances since January.
The 43-year-old Scottish professional golf player was ill during the game-play of the Cadillac Championship, a World Golf Championship staged tournament.
He faced severe illness in the final round and was about to withdraw from the tournament. However, he boosted his spirits and finished the tournament tied on the 60th position.
The main reason to play under such tough circumstances was related to his efforts to make it to the Ryder Cup.
Lawrie wants to be a part of the European Team and a withdrawal would have affected his points adversely.
Hence, to earn points, he was not in favour of the withdrawal and finished the tournament by scoring low scores. His 60th position was not so appealing, but it may help to earn Ryder Cup points.
“I hadn’t been feeling too well last week but on Saturday I was up coughing most of the night,” Lawrie, the 1999 Open Championship winner, said.
He continued, “I was going to pull out on Sunday until I found out you have to complete four rounds for the money to count on the order of merit and Ryder Cup points, so I decided to cough and splutter my way round”.
“Last week, even before [I started to feel unwell] I had really struggled with the speed of my swing, so with the way I was feeling made it harder,” he added.
Finishing a tournament, while suffering from sickness is laudable. His hard work can be seen by his position in the European Team standings.
He currently holds the 5th position in the European Ryder Cup Points List and 7th in the World Ryder Cup Points List.
He is in his full form and is playing tremendously in the current year. It is highly expected that he will be playing from September 25 to 30, at the Medinah Country Club, Illinois in USA.
He won the title of the Commercialbank Qatar Masters with a lead of four strokes.
He also finished the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship on the 8th place and the WGC - Accenture Match Play Championship on the 9th position.
More top finishes mean more earnings and points. However, he has ample chances in the upcoming events of the European Tour, where he can display amazing stokes and enormous scoring as well.
