Paul Lawrie struggles in the first round of the Spanish Open
Paul Lawrie of Scotland was unable to score well in the first round of the Spanish Open, as he shot a 6-over 78 on Thursday, May 3, 2012.
The 43-year-old professional star displayed a poor performance at the Real Club de Golf de Sevilla, in Seville, Spain. He did not compete well throughout the day and faced difficulty scoring.
He started the round in a decent style and shot eight pars and one bogey on the front nine holes of the Spanish course. However, due to a poor performance overall in the round, he dropped to a lower position on the leader board.
He again shot four more pars on the 10th, 11th and 12th hole and only scored two birdies on the 13th and 16th hole.
He lost his focus on the 15th hole and shot a devastating quadruple bogey on the par-4, 15th hole.
He shot his second bogey on the 17th hole and ended the round by carding a double-bogey on the 18th.
“If you know you can't compete in a particular tournament, then why go?” Lawrie said. “It's a big call and a lot of people are going to say I should be playing, but you have to do what you feel is best. I understand that it is a major, but I feel I have
more chance of playing well at the BMW International Open the week after”.
He is working hard to make it to the Ryder Cups’ European Team, however he is not playing an impressive game, as he tied for the 127th position in the first round.
Lawrie also shared that he faced difficulty scoring due to wet and windy weather at Seville. Due to such unfavourable weather conditions, most of the contenders displayed mediocre performances.
The top-4 Ryder Cup position holders are not playing in the current week. It means that Lawrie has ample chances to impress the officials and become eligible for the mega tournament by scoring well.
Shaun Micheel is currently on the top of the leader board. The American scored a 5-under 67 in the first round, gaining a one-stroke lead over three players.
Lawrie is ten strokes behind the leader. He has to do his best in the second round, so that he can reach the top position and improve his standing on the European Team Points List.
