Paul Martens wins the Vuelta a Burgos stage 4
Paul Martens opened his 2012 winning account with an outrageous performance during the stage 4 of the Vuelta a Burgos 2012.
He helped Team Rabobank with the second consecutive win at the contest after his team-mate Matti Breschel succeeded during the stage three.
Paul completed the 170 kilometre race between Dona Santos to Cuidad Romana De Clunia in an impressive time of 3 hours, 50 minutes and 35 seconds and overcame the race favourite.
Daniel Moreno is having a terrific season and is a strong contender to bag an overall victory at the race but Martens managed to get through the defences of his Spanish compatriot during the stage 4.
Daniel fell 2 seconds short and achieved the second position whereas, Simon Clarke of Team Orica GreenEdge, Nacer Bouhanni of Team FDJ-BigMat and Stefano Garzelli of Team Acqua & Sapone secured the next three spots.
"My last win was in the GP Wallonia," Martens voiced.
"That is quite a while ago. My spring season did not turn out the way I wished it had and at some point you start to doubt yourself tremendously”.
“You really need success to get over it, but that is so very difficult. The same goes for Matti Breschel. You want it so badly, but there are so many factors playing a role".
Moreno still leads the stage 4 general classifications and is hopeful to maintain his lead for the final stage of the race.
However, he was not satisfied with his performance during the stage 4 and noted that he was pretty close on bagging a stage victory at the race.
"I'm a little disappointed for this second place, obviously I always want to win, but the main goal today was to gain some seconds over my rivals," said Moreno.
Daniel now has a lead of 13 seconds over Matti Breschel of Team Rabobank with Stefano Garzelli holding-up the third spot.
Tom Dumoulin, Nacer Bouhanni and Daniele Ratto are at the fourth, fifth and sixth positions after the Vuelta A Burgos stage 4 classifications.
Moreno is now targeting the 170 kilometre final stage of the race and he is well placed to seal an overall victory at the Vuelta A Burgos 2012.
