So is it still the forgettable mess it was Always trashed as for years or has (more) time been kinder to his 80s output?

Like any long-established artist, there're inevitable holes in their body of work, but Maccas got some nice little gems from that era. I enjoy:

"Angry"

"Pipes of Peace" (title track)

"Spies Like Us"

"Waterfalls"

"Coming Up" (I like the live version too)

"Frozen j*p"

"Figure of 8"

"My Brave Face"

"Here Today" (song for John- beautiful)

"Ballroom Dancing"

et al...

What songs/ albums do you like from that period of his?

  1. my favorite song from that era is the duet he did with Stevie Wonder "Ebony and Ivory"

  2. wow, i love ALL Wings work, and even his solo stuff after their dissolution.

The London Town album is AMAZING, but yeah, yeah i know. 1978. close enough to the 80s tho.

but are you telling me that no one likes "Coming Up"??

wow, that's like, a Paul McCartney ANTHEM!

  3. As a fan who faithfully followed his career with awe of his true greatness, it's likely that my expectations of Paul may have been unrealistic but..IMO for what it's worth, McCartney struggled with his creativity through this period.

    I can only speculate why.

Is it possible that John's death in 80 effected him personally more than anybody will publicly know? I often wondered.

  4. I honestly don't know much of his 80's work yet. I have Harrison's complete solo work and I've started work on Lennon's. McCartney....well I have a few albums, but nothing from the 80's. Although, I would appreciate any recommendations from someone like yourself.

  5. Unfortunately (or Fortunately) - I was Learning about McCartney's 80's work, at the Same time I was learning about The Beatles & Wings LOL.

So - I found his 80's work enjoyable.

McCartney II is a Very Good Album - and I can listen to it straight through.

"Pipes of Peace" stands on its own; and the Title Track is Wonderful.

I was not that interested in his work with Jackson or his Soundtrack songs -- though I DID like "No More Lonely Nights" -- I wasn't as thrilled with "Spies Like Us" ( I noticed that on Your List - Sorry :) - Just my opinion.

I agree on "My Brave Face" though some older kids made fun of me for liking it (jerks !!) LOL -- and I have "Flowers in the Dirt"

The album "СHOBA B СССР" is VERY Enjoyable - with all of the Old R&R songs

So, now that I am older - I can certainly see More Genius with The Beatles and his Solo & Wings Compositions in the 70's - but Paul IS a Great SongWriter in My Opinion - and I know that a lot of Lennon Fans Hate Him -- But, that does not change my opinion.

    I know what I like :)

    .

How can you NAWT Like a Guy, who helped Bring "melodic bass lines" to Rock Music ??

    .

  6. He totally dropped out of my line of sight after the '70s.... the only song I can think of that is from that era is Live and Let Die... (and that's only because I worked his show in 1990 and it was the "fireworks" highlight that night!).

I don't recognize *any* of the songs you listed "by title" ~ may recognize them by sound...

    **edit**

    HAHA ~ 1973 / 1990 ~ the years do run together!

  7. I've always liked the Give My Regards To Broad Street album.

No More Lonely Nights (Ballad Version)

    Not Such A Bad Boy

    No Values

    Plus the re-makes of

    Wanderlust

    Ballroom Dancing

    are nice too

  8. The one I love and bought was 'Back To The Egg' which came out the same time the single 'Coming Up' did.  The video (yes they had them then...lol) had Paul playing the part of every band member but the song was NOT on the new album!!!!!!!!!!!!  It was only released as a single at that time.  The album was great though and had 'Goodnight Tonight' , 'Arrow Through Me' and my favorite, 'Spin It On'.  :)

  9. I've honestly only heard Press To Play, so I can't judge his 80's work..

All I know is that I really didn't enjoy that album. There were a couple of songs that I thought were okay, but I didn't even like those enough to memorise their names, or upload the CD onto my computer.

  10. the only McCartney songs from the 80's that don't make me change the radio channel are "Coming Up" and "Arrow through Me."
