Paul McCloskey takes on DeMarcus Corley in a 12-round bout – Boxing News
Paul McCloskey, the former EBU (European) light welterweight champion, is ready to take on a more experienced pugilist DeMarcus Corley, the former NABF light welterweight champion, in a 12-round bout that will be held on May 5, 2012.
The above duo will headline the event which is being promoted by Barry Hearn of Matchroom Boxing. The ring for the Saturday night showdown will be stretched at Kings Hall situated in Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom.
The night will be co-headlined by the six-round non-title bout between Martin Lindsay and Mickey Coveney. Paul and DeMarcus recently attended a pre-bout media interaction session and shared their thoughts about each other.
Paul, 32, is a surging British pugilist who by his impressive performance now resides at World Boxing Organisation’s (WBO) 15th rank. The southpaw stance brawler has been in a total 24 bouts and has lost just one bout to Amir Khan.
After that bout he took on Breidis Prescott recently and collected a unanimous decision win in his favour hence winning the WBA Light welterweight title eliminator bout. The British proud has successfully collected almost all the apex divisional titles and
is now looking forward to the WBA light welterweight gold.
His opponent, Corley, 37, is a veteran who has a huge experience in his gear. DeMarcus, also known as ‘Chop Chop’, has been in a total 58 bouts and emerged victorious in 38. He has nailed 22 of his opponents by knocking them out cold and has held almost
all the divisional titles round his waist including the WBO light welterweight gold.
As far as the experience is concerned, Corley clearly has an upper hand over Paul but at the same time the British possesses a decent win as well as knockout proficiency that will help him in creating an upset.
This is the reason why Paul showed great optimism in the press conference and commented, “I’m working with a good promoter - Eddie Hearn. He’s one of the best in the business and no doubt that can happen very soon. He’s a former world champion and he's been
around a long time and has beaten some very good fighters.”
The veteran DeMarcus also showed no sign of intimidation and stated, “I’m ready 100%; I’m looking forward to putting on a great show. Paul McCloskey is in for a real awakening.”
The bout is worth watching since both men will enter the ring to prove that they are worthy of being dubbed as a future champion.
