Paul McCloskey to face Julio Diaz on May 5 – Boxing News
Irish southpaw Paul McCloskey is scheduled to face former IBF world lightweight champion Julio Diaz on May 5, at the King’s Hall in Belfast. McCloskey aims to go for another title shot after winning this brawl.
McCloskey’s last fight took place in September last year, in which he defeated Breidis Prescott. Before his encounter with Prescott, the Irish southpaw was defeated by British Amir Khan through points decision in a bout which took place in Manchester.
The King’s Hall will be hosting the 24th edition of Prizefighter as well on May 5, after McCloskey’s fight. Other fighters that will be featured the same night include Eamonn O’Kane, Anthony Fitzgerald, Mark Heffron, Joe Rea and Darren Cruise.
The show’s promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed schedule.
When asked further about the event, Eddie remarked, "If you imagine the best atmosphere of any Prizefighter to date, then crank it off the dial, I still don't think you are close to what we are about to witness on May 5.”
He then praised Paul McCloskey’s charisma and fighting skills by saying, “Couple that with Paul McCloskey's faithful army of incredible fans and I believe this has the potential to go down in history as one of the great Irish fight nights."
According to Eddie, details of the tickets will soon be revealed in Belfast next week via press conference.
McCloskey will be heading towards another title shot sometime later this year. For now, he is looking forward to defeat two-time former world champion Diaz. After his victory over Breidis, McCloskey is now confident that he can move forward to another title
shot easily. If he beats Diaz, he will be considered for the second shot.
Paul McCloskey won the IBF International light welterweight title in 2007 by defeating Tontcho Tontchev in the fourth round. He then went on to win the vacant British light-welterweight title by stopping Colin Lynes in the ninth round of the bout on December
5, 2008. After his convincing victories over some of the most prominent boxing stars, McCloskey was being considered among the rising stars, until he lost to Khan. However, McCloskey still feels that he can get a second title shot later this year if he successfully
overpowers Julio Diaz.
