Paul McGinley shares third spot while Martin Kaymer struggles at the BMW International Open

Paul McGinley fired a bogey-free seven-under par 65 in the opening round of the BMW International Open at the Golf Club Gut Larchenhof to share the third spot on Thursday, June 21, 2012.
McGinley got off to a solid start and recorded three birdies on the front nine of the course to go three-under for the round.
Another three birdies and an amazing eagle on the back nine allowed him to settle one stroke behind the pace set by Marcus Fraser and Fabrizio Zanotti at an eight-under par.
At the end of the round, he looked happy, especially because of the great finish that saw him score a birdie and an eagle each on the final three holes.
"That was a great finish and it's turned a good day into a great day," McGinley said.
Chris Wood and Danny Willet were the other two players to record a score of seven-under par 65.
Willet also had a bogey-free round that included five birdies and a stunning eagle on the par-five 16th hole.
On the hand, Wood managed to sink nine birdies against two bogeys to post the same score on the leaderboard.
The highlight of his performance includes five birdies that he scored on the opening six holes that he played.
In the meantime, the home favourite Martin Kaymer registered a one-under par 71 after carding only two birdies against a lone bogey.
Kaymer looked really disappointed because of the missed birdie chances that he had in Cologne.
According to the golf commentators, he could have done much better if he had managed to putt well throughout the opening round.
It seemed as if he was out of his focus and the ball kept on missing the cups by inches. He told that the tiring journey and lack of rest was the major reason behind his poor performance on the course.
“I only slept two hours last night,” Kaymer complained about the enduring effect of flying from San Francisco. “I made only two birdies, which is not a lot on this course. I didn’t drive the ball very well”.
Kaymer was joined by Simon Thornton and Shane Lowry in the evening after both recorded a one-under par 71 each.
