Paul Wesselingh aims high for the Senior Open Championship – Golf news
Paul Wesselingh is set to record another senior tour victory this week when he tees off at the Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex, slated to start from July 25, 2013.
The tournament is the last of the four senior major golf championships of the season, and will be staged at the Royal Birdlake Golf Club, featuring a strong lineup gathered from different parts of the world.
Wesselingh is currently enjoying a great form on the European Senior Tour, having successfully defended the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship title, followed by another victory at the 2013 Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open.
The victories also allowed him to surge to the top of the Senior Tour Order of Merit list, and he is now planning to retain the top spot with another strong showing at the Senior Open Championship.
Talking to the European Senior Tour’s official website, he said that he will be banking on the local knowledge, as he lives just 20 miles away from the host venue course of Birdlake.
He said that the experience will play a key role in playing well against some of the best players in the world, including Fred Couplesdebutant Colin Montgomerie and Tom Watson, who is no doubt an amazing links course player.
“I was brought up no more than half an hour away from Royal Birkdale and I played it quite a lot over the years,” he said. “I really like the course and it’s in great condition, so it should be a good week. The fact that we have now had a little bit of rain
has softened it up a bit.”
“I grew up in Wigan so I’ve played a lot of the courses down this stretch of coastline and hopefully that can help me this week,” added the Englishman. “Some of these guys in the field are amazing players and it is going to be great to try to beat them.”
For the first two rounds of the Senior Open Championship Presented by Rolex, the 51 year old is paired with the Senior Major Champions Michael Allen and Fred Funk.
