Paul Wesselingh receives the European Seniors Tour Rookie of the Year award
Paul Wesselingh is happy that his efforts have finally paid him off, as the Englishman has racked up the European Seniors Tour Rookie of the Year title.
Wesselingh enjoyed a remarkable run of form during his debut season at the 50-and-over European circuit.
He made a strong start to his campaign by finishing tied for the second position at the Mallorca Open Senior.
He then tied for the seventh position at the Benahavis Senior Masters, prior to earning his maiden victory on the tour by winning the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship.
Thereafter, he kept the momentum going into the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open and the Berenberg Bank Masters and recorded top-10 finishes.
The last two tournaments, the Fubon Senior Open and the French Riviera Masters, also witnessed him showcase some excellent set of skills on the course. As a result, he finished fifth and tied for the third position, respectively.
Entering the season-ending MCB Tour Championship, the 51-year-old holds the fifth spot in the European Seniors Tour Order of Merit.
Talking to the reporters after receiving the Rookie of the Year award, he said that it was the highlight of his career to become the best debutant of the season on the prestigious tour.
“I was aware of the award during the year and people would ask me about it, but I didn’t really think about it much until the win at Slaley Hall,” he said.
“It wasn’t something I set out to win, but as the season went on I was aware of my position in the Order of Merit and realised it was a possibility”.
“The target at the start of the season was to finish in the top 30 and keep my card, but it looks like I’ll be in the top ten or even top five,” added Wesselingh, who used to play golf as a club professional, prior to joining the Seniors Tour through the
First Stage of Qualifying School last year.
The Englishman has now set his sights on ending his 2012 campaign on a high note by recording his second victory of the season, when he tees off next month in Mauritius.
