Paul Wesselingh takes home Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open – Golf news
Paul Wesselingh birdied the third extra hole in the playoffs of the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open to claim his second victory of the European Senior Tour season.
The tournament was being staged at the Golf Club Bad Ragaz, featuring a number of top notch players from different parts of the world.
Right from the beginning of the final round, Wesselingh looked in great form as he gained five shots over the first six holes that he played, courtesy of three birdies and an amazing eagle on the fourth hole.
He then added another two shots on the 10th and the 11th hole to surge to the top of the leaderboard. Thereafter, he lost control over his game and bogeyed three of the last five holes that he played.
However, a couple of bogeys on the 16th and the 17th hole kept him in game, even after Kevin Spurgeon made a strong charge in the final moments on the fourth round – he recorded three birdies over the last four holes.
At the end of the fourth round in regulation, both the players were sharing the top spot on a nine-under par overall score.
As a result, the game entered into the sudden-death playoff, where Wesselingh outshined his opponent on the third extra hole.
Talking to the Senior Tour’s official website, he expressed his pleasure in overcoming a five-shot deficit that he had entering into the final round.
“I started off five behind and set myself a target of 10 under to win, but you’re never sure if that’s going to be enough,” explained Wesselingh. “But I started off so well, and being five under par through six holes was incredible.”
“I felt pretty comfortable after that, until I was walking down 14 and I saw I still had a two shot lead. It might not have been a good idea to know that, and straight afterwards I made a couple of bogeys. But then I made two tremendous putts on the next
two, before a silly bogey on 18,” he added.
It was Wesselingh’s third Senior Tour victory in 19 starts that he has made so far and the win took him to the top of the Order of Merit list for the current season.
