Paul Williams and Sergio Martinez to re-match
Good news for fans of Paul Williams and Sergio Martinez. Promoter Dan Goossen announced on Monday that the two fighters will face each other again on November 20. Goossen, who handles Williams, said the fight will take place at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic
City. Martinez's World Boxing Council middleweight title will be at stake in the bout.
In their first meeting late last year, Williams and Martinez slugged it out for 12 rounds before the former was declared the winner via majority decision. The two left-handed fighters both scored knockdowns in the first round. In the fourth, Williams suffered
a cut after an accidental clash of heads, but it didn't slow him down. In fact, Williams threw more punches, keeping pace with his opponent until the final bell. Two judges scored the fight in favour of Williams, while the third scored it a draw.
The November bout will be Williams' first fight since posting a bizarre victory over Kermit Cintron in May. Williams was awarded a technical decision win after Cintron fell through the ropes in the fifth round and suffered an injury. Williams opted to challenge
for the middleweight crown after failing to land lucrative deals in the welterweight division, and the 29-year-old went on to win the World Boxing Organisation welterweight title with a unanimous-decision win over Antonio Margarito in 2007. He suffered a unanimous-decision
setback to Carlos Quintana in his first title defence, but reclaimed his belt by stopping the Puerto Rican in the first round of their re-match in 2008. Williams has a record of 39 wins, one loss and 27 knockouts.
Meanwhile, Martinez bounced back from his loss to Williams by posting a unanimous-decision win over Kelly Pavlik in April to claim both the WBA and WBO middleweight belts. The California-based Argentine improved his record to 45-2-2 with 24 KOs. His only
other loss came at the hands of Margarito way back in 2000.
