Paul Williams beats Erislandy Lara of Cuba in welterweight division – Boxing news
The American professional boxer Paul Williams won a controversial 12-round decision against the welterweight contender Erislandy Lara of Cuba at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Samuel Viruet was appointed as the referee of that competitive bout. Two of the judges Hilton Whitaker and Donald Givens gave the points as 115-114 and 116-114 in favour of the former two-time WBO Welterweight Champion Williams. However, according to the
third judge, Al Bennett, the points were same for both of the fighters as 114-114.
Williams, who fights at Welterweight, Junior Middleweight and Middleweight divisions, has successfully defeated many world recognised boxing superstars in his professional career. His considerable victories were against Winky Wright, Sergio Martinez, Kermit
Cintron, Antonio Margarito and Carlos Quintana.
Paul ‘The Punisher’ Williams performed very well in his past fights to take his career up in the right direction. The 29-year-old Southpaw stance Williams went to the ring after being defeated by Sergio Gabriel Martinez in his second last fight in 2010 at
the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Williams lost second-round knockout decision and the WBC Middleweight title in the process. He has fought 42 of his total fights of which he won 40 competitive bouts including 27 knockout victories with 2 losses and no draws in his professional boxing career.
Williams turned professional winning a four-round points decision against Jeremy Mickelson in 2000 in North Carolina, United States.
After 33 of his consecutive fights, Williams faced the first professional loss of his career, when he lost a 12-round unanimous points’ decision and the chance to claim WBO Welterweight title against Carlos Quintana in 2008 at the Pechanga Resort & Casino
in Temecula, California.
The 28-year-old Southpaw stance Lara faced the first loss of his career after losing a unanimous points’ decision to Williams. Lara turned professional winning four round points’ decision against Ivan Maslov in 2008 in Turkey.
After winning 13 of his back-to-back fights, Lara faced the first draw of his career against Carlos Molina in his second last fight.
