Paul Williams thanks fans and family members for support – Boxing News
Paul Williams, former two-time welterweight titlist, made a statement regarding his current situation. Williams, who met a devastating motorcycle accident on May 27, is now paralysed from the waist down. Even after a long surgery, doctors were unable to
make Williams’ condition any better. For now, there is no hope of Williams walking again. However, the pugilist has repeatedly said that he will be back on his toes and in the ring.
Yesterday, Williams sent out a public statement for his fans and family members through Rachel Charles, publicist. The statement read, “I feel the love and support from everyone and it's overwhelming. I am very thankful to all of my fans and friends who
have rallied around me in a time when I need them the most.”
Williams underwent a 6 hour operation last week. Doctors hoped that they could stabilize his lower body but it did not work out. Now, doctors have confirmed that Williams will not be able to walk again since his spinal has been severely damaged in the accident.
Williams, who was to face Saul Alvarez on September 15, will now spend time in the hospital trying to recover.
Last week, after the incident, Williams’ manager, George Peterson revealed about his condition saying, “From the waist down, he has absolutely no movement. He's in very good spirits, though. He still believes he's going to fight again. I know he's going
to make a statement after surgery on Wednesday, because he's that kind of person. He's 100 per cent coherent and still has the will to want to get back on the motorcycle. I want to think along with him cause I've seen him do things in his boxing career that
shouldn't have happened. We want his fans to know he's going to be all right and he'll be back. He said if he wasn't going to be boxing, he's going to be a stand-up comedian.”
For now, Williams and Peterson believe the pugilist can be back on his feet. However, chances are that since his spinal cord is completely damaged, especially the lower part, he will not be able to be on his toes again.
