Paul Williams wants Manny Pacquiao
Despite his upcoming clash with Sergio Martinez, which is guaranteed to be a barnburner, Paul Williams wants Manny Pacquiao.
In a recent Fanhouse interview, "The Punisher" said, "I would love to get a fight with Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao is the man out there now. Manny's got all of the hype right now. He's got eight world titles, so he's the man, and you've got to give
him his props."
In some senses, a fight between the two isn’t such a distant reality. Following his systematic dismantling of Antonio Margarito on the weekend, Pacquiao is the best fighter in the world. By most accounts, Williams weighs in at No 3.
Pacquiao also fought Margarito at a catchweight of 150 pounds—a weight Williams can make. Much has been said about Williams’ freakish ability to make nearly all weights between welter and middle, despite his height of 6ft 2in.
On the other hand, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum doesn’t seem too excited at the prospect of Pacquiao and Williams, for obvious reasons. Weight is one thing, but Williams is eight inches taller than Pacquiao, who began his career as a junior flyweight (108
pounds).
Musing on a fight with Pacquiao, Williams said, "It would play out probably with me throwing a lot of punches and with him throwing a lot of punches. You know that it would be a straight-up war."
Williams is preparing for his November 20 clash with Sergio Martinez, which is expected to be one of the best fights of the year. They met in December of 2009 for a fight that saw both fighters hit the canvas in the opening round and was voted one of the
top fights of the year.
"The Punisher" will be looking to take Martinez’s WBC middleweight title, which he won by defeating Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlik.
