  1. I do woodwork on large private yachts primarily, and it's ridiculous how much people spend on their yachts.

    The captain's response is correct.

FYI - I saw an interview with Donald Trump and he was asked what his absolute WORST investment ever was.

He immediately responded that it was his yacht.

Always dumping money into it only to have it depreciate.

He was very happy to get rid of his hole in the water that he just kept pouring money into.

  2. Dream on guys... and either put your money away... or - all of you need to pay each other... you are so very far off... your not even in the same ocean, much less - ball park.

For one... The 413-ft. long Octopus has a crew of 60 including a team of security experts, and some former members of the US Navy Seals Special Forces.

In addition, she carries (not one, but) two helicopters, she has seven additional boats, plus a 10 man submarine and a remote controlled vehicle for crawling on the Ocean floor. The submarine alone has the capacity to sleep eight for up to two weeks underwater.

The maintenance cost of the vessel is most likely slightly more than $68,000.00 a day - plus fuel - plus dock fees...

Your estimate would not cover the helicopters, not to mention the submarine.  Octopus has a large swimming pool and an onboard music "studio".  Plus a private movie theater, a basketball court (located on the main aft deck).

I am afraid fellows... that even your highest estimate would not even cover the fuel for a day when she is underway... and in fact, she doesn't sit in one place very long.

For future reference, a good estimate on the true cost of boat ownership is to take the original cost divided by 10... annually.  Octopus was $250 million... 10% would add $25M annually... plus fuel, plus dock fees...  pretty close huh!

At any rate... the link you so desire is listed below... I think you will find it backs up my statements.

  3. The rough rule of thumb is 10% of purchase price are the fees and expenses for a mega yacht per year. Of course this can vary widely. Who knows what the Octopus could be?

Edit: I looked it up online, and the estimate was $20 million per year!
