Paul di Resta – “Vettel and Hamilton were luckier than I am”
The new entrant in Formula One team Force India, Paul di Resta sees Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton luckier than himself. While talking to the media earlier today, he proclaimed that when all three drivers entered the sport, FIA rules were far different
from now, which helped them reach the pinnacle of success. He admits that both are great racers but also believes that things have been "easier" for them in Formula One than many other racers.
Hamilton, the 26-year-old Briton entered the highest ranked auto sport of the world in year 2007. He wrapped up his miraculous debut season at 2nd place, missing the championship only by a single point at the last round of the season. As his second
season ended, he stood as the youngest World Champion ever in the sport’s history. Similarly, the Red Bull driver, Vettel bagged his first title at the end of last season, breaking Hamilton’s record as he became the youngest World Champion at the age of 23
years and 90 days. Just like Hamilton, Vettel has also covered this journey very swiftly, bagging the championship only after third complete season with the sport.
Now, as di Resta makes his way in the sport, he desires to be a part of the same "generation" as the two young world champions, but doubts if his graph will rise that quickly. He explained saying, "I wouldn't say it's been frustrating, (but) they've had
it easier than me. They (Vettel and Hamilton) had different backing and that got them there a bit quicker. Looking at it they were luckier than I am, but I've got there."
The 24-year-old is the new DTM champion of 2010 season and has previously beaten Vettel by grabbing the F3 Euroseries title in the 2006 season. He further stated that the achievements of these drivers, who once stood at a similar level to him, do not discourage
him; rather provide an impetus to struggle harder. He further insisted, "I don't want to sound big-headed, but I wasn't racing them when they won their championships. We've had some great battles in the past. Hopefully I'll get a repeat of that in the future."
The driver’s seat in Formula One was announced last evening (Wednesday) by the Force India team boss, Vijay Mallya. He will be seen with the Indian team this year alongside the German racer, Adrian Sutil.
