Paul di Resta thinks Fernando Alonso deserves the title in 2013 – Formula 1 news
Force India driver Paul di Resta has said that Fernando Alonso of Ferrari should have been the world champion in 2012 and tipped the Spaniard to win the title in 2013 Formula 1 season.
Alonso performed inspiringly well in the preceding season and score competitive points with admirable consistency. In spite of the fact that the Scarlet squad struggled with their car development during the last year’s pre-season testing programme and expected
to face immense problems in the opening few races, the two-time world champion successfully limited the damage for his team and delivered tremendous performances.
The 31-year-old fought for the title right until the very end of the last season. But, unfortunately he lost the championship battle by just 3 points to his main rival, Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing who had the most competent car in field towards the
end of the previous year.
Di Resta, like several other drivers and F1 pundits, has asserted that Alonso should have been the last year’s champion.
“He should have been champion last year,” the 27-year-old, referring to Ferrari’s Alonso, told Speed Week. “For me, Alonso is the champion of 2012.”
Besides, he said that Vettel should not have joined F1 before him as he is around one year older than the German driver and won the F3 Euro Series Championship.
“Looking at it they were luckier than I am,” Di Resta said. “He (Vettel) shouldn’t have gotten there before me.”
In addition, he said that the veteran driver of the Maranello based team surely deserves to win this year’s championship.
“He had his problems in Malaysia and Bahrain,” he added, “but Ferrari looks very strong. I think he deserves the championship.”
Alonso is currently at third place in the drivers’ championship with 72 points. Furthermore, he is ahead of Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes and behind his main rival, Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus. He has already secured two race victories and a podium finish in the
season until now. It will be thrilling to see how he performs in the Monaco GP which is going to be held in Monte Carlo this weekend.
