Paula Creamer happy with first-round performance at Hoylake
American Paula Creamer looked more than thrilled after the first round of the wind-marred Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012, as she managed to post a 73.
Creamer is expected to end her protracted winning drought this season, but it remains to be seen how the American star performs in the major battle that has already been hit by strong winds.
With winds ripping through the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake, on Friday morning, officials scrambled to declare the second round null and void, requiring the players to come back on Saturday to make a fresh start.
Creamer, who was happy with her first-round performance, could not start the play on Friday, is keen to improve her score in the remaining rounds as she said an average game on Thursday gave her much-needed confidence.
Faltering at the start of the first day, the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) titan carded two straight bogeys on the first two holes. However, she regained her momentum by scoring a birdie on the fourth hole.
On the back nine, Creamer swung into action as she tried to ramp up pressure on rivals. She shot three birdies and one bogey on the last nine holes.
Although the second day was completely disrupted by strong winds, the first day also saw some rough conditions as players found it difficult to stay focused on some holes.
Sharing her thoughts about the weather on the first day of the major championship, Creamer said that it remained calm most of the day, but gusty winds continued to rattle players off and on.
“I wouldn't say that for sure. It was kind of windy early on and then designed of died and then came back to being a little bit windy. Like I said, a little bit hard on myself, because I did play so much better than shooting 1-over in these conditions,” the American golfer said while speaking to the LPGA.
Expressing her regret over not being able to clinch the title at Kingsmill Championship 2012, she said she plays “in a lot of tournaments, that kind of thing”.
Creamer said she is happy that she remained in contention till the final moment of the tournament.
“It's just something that happened unfortunately but I still was in a playoff and had a chance to do well and that's all I can really take from”.
