Paula Ormaechea defeats Shelby Rogers to reach the main draw – Family Circle Cup 2012
Fifth seeded qualifier, Paula Ormaechea of Argentina, registered convincing victory over the American wildcard entrant, Shelby Rogers, in the qualifying competition of the Family Circle Cup on Sunday. The 19-year-old Argentine
took one hour and 49 minutes to wind up victory in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, marching into the main rounds of the WTA (Women’s Tennis association) Premier-level event in Charleston, USA.
It was a fairly poised contest at the beginning but Ormaechea gradually asserted her dominance over her opponent in the later stages. She went through some tough channels in the opening set, eventually bagging it in the 12th
game to take the driving seat. She then shifted to her rage mode and quickly went through Rogers in the next set to seal her comprehensive victory.
Rogers’ inability to convert her chances proved extremely taxing in the match. She had seven break opportunities but could only convert three of them, whilst the fifth seed contestant nailed five serve breaks to dump her from the
tournament. Both contestants were equally good on their return games, bagging 17 points apiece but the only difference was made by the break point conversions from the Argentine.
A gruelling opening set was witnessed, with the two competitors battling extremely hard to gain some early advantage in the match. A total of seven break points were exchanged in the set number one, with Ormaechea striking four
and her opponent following her with three serve breaks.
Action took off from the fourth game of the opener, with Ormaechea registering the first serve break of the day. A series of break points was followed, with both contestants exchanging three serve breaks each but Ormaechea kept
her one-game lead intact to close out the opening set at 7-5.
Ormaechea carried on playing aggressive tennis in the next set as well and secured 16 out of 21 first serve points. Rogers crafted four break opportunities in the second set but utterly failed to convert any of the vital chances
to remain at a disadvantage. Eventually, Ormaechea delivered the death blow in the ninth game to pocket the second set at 6-3 and marched into the main draw of the Family Circle Cup in style. A total of 142 points were played in the matchup and Ormaechea secured
75 of them, whilst the French closely followed her with 67 points.
Ormaechea will play her opening round match against the unseeded Aussie tennis ace, Jelena Dokic.
