Paula Ormaechea ousts Corinna Dentoni to qualify for the first round - XX Copa BBVA Colsanitas 2012
Argentine teenager, Paula Ormaechea, overpowered the 22-years-old Italian competitor, Corinna Dentoni, in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. With this triumph, she qualifies for the main round of the XX Copa BBVA Colsantias tournament,
contested on clay courts of Bogota, Colombia.
Both players contested on exactly the same date in 2011 during the second round of the same tournament. It was the Italian who took the win in a gruelling three-setter and qualified for the main round but this time the Argentine
was the one who showed the superior quality game play and booked a spot in the opening round.
An unconventional start to the match witnessed a swap of breakpoints. However, both players settled into the atmosphere and capitalized on their serve games. The see-saw battle continued until the scores were pushed to 3-3.
Another trade of breakpoints kept the scores together at 4-4.
Ormaechea was under the cosh in the ninth game but she handled the situation smartly; introduced a couple of drop shots in every rally to stay on top of the point and bagged the serve game with ease. The pressure swung back
to the Italian, who was serving to stay in the set. She lost some of the initial points, courtesy to a silly unforced error. Although, she recovered back well, she couldn’t travel far enough with the points lead before her opponent caught her.
Unfortunately, she slipped during the rally that allotted a breakpoint opportunity to her opponent. With immense pressure on her shoulder to enforce another deuce, she faulted and gifted the breakpoint t her opponent that
sealed the first set triumph for the Argentine at 6-4.
Second set started with a successful serve game for the teenager before a trade of breakthroughs enhanced the score line to 2-1 in her favour. She broke her opponent’s serve again to enhance the scores to 3-1. With another
successful breakthrough in the set, she bagged the second set with a breadstic. It was a comprehensive triumph for the Argentine teenager who was in search for a revenge; a night before the Valentine’s Day.
Other qualifiers for the main round include the likes of Ines Ferrer-Suarez of Spain, Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan and her compatriot, Sesil Karatantcheva.
Suarez defeated the Annalisa Bona in an exciting three-setter. Shvedova and her compatriot, Karatantcheva, ousted their opponents Leticia Costas-Moreira and Ximena Hermoso respectively in the qualifying competition of the
XX Copa BBVA Colsantias.
