Paula Ormaechea outfoxes Petra Rampre to reach the quarters – XX Copa BBVA Colsanitas 2012
Argentinean qualifier, Paula Ormaechea, overcame the Slovenian contender, Petra Rampre, in a three set thriller at the XX Copa BBVA Colsanitas 2012 on Thursday. She jolted down a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(4) victory against the Slovenian veteran to advance into the final eight at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International-level tournament held on the clay courts in Bogota, Colombia.
The 19-year-old lost her track in the second set but outclassed the Slovene in the final set tie-breaker at the Club Campestre El Rancho. She clobbered a better first serve share of 59 percent as compared to Rampre’s 47 percent and amazingly marked 42 put of 61 points on it. Ormaechea also sought 16 break opportunities and cashed in five of them to advance into the quarter-finals.
Coming off from the qualifying completion of this event, Ormaechea assertively entered the opening set and held her serve in the second game at 1-1. She then maintained consistency in her game until she drew the first blood in the seventh game and put her nose ahead in the match. In spite of losing her serve in the very next game, the Argentinean capitalised on another break opportunity and subsequently clinched the opener with a 6-4 score line.
Ranked 171st in the WTA rankings, Rampre kept her drastic ways in the following set and gifted away her serve in the opening game. However, she snatched her break back in the fourth game and then held remaining serves by warding off four breakpoints. The Slovene then got the breakthrough in the eighth game and bagged the equaliser by winning six games to three.
The match was stuck at this moment and the qualifier suffered the first blow in the fifth game. Regardless of recovering in the proceeding game she gifted away her serve again in the ninth game to trail at 4-5. However, Ormaechea rebounded in the very next game and took the set to a tie-breaker. The Argentinean prevailed in it to seal the decider with a 7-6(4) win.
Next challenge for the world number 141 is the Spanish contender, Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino, who crippled Eva Birnerova from Czech Republic with a bagel to set-up this encounter.
