Paula Ormaechea struggles past Andrea Hlavackova in the qualies at Brussels Ladies Open
Argentine’s Paula Ormaechea made an upset by defeating qualifying second seed Andrea Hlavackova of Czech Republic in the second round of qualifying draw of the Brussels Ladies Open, at the Royal Primerose Tennis Club in Brussels,
Belgium on Sunday. The 237th ranked Ormaechea outplayed her opponent in straight sets 6-2, 7-6(5), in one hour and thirty four minutes to advance to the final round of the qualifying draw.
The match was almost a one-sided affair as the eighteen year old proved to be a bit too tough for the Czech who is currently world number ninety seven. It was a ninety four minutes long battle between the two players but in the
end the Argentine settled the brawl in a victorious style.
In the match Hlavackova felt some difficulty to defend the Ormaechea’s powerful serve and struggled a lot when responding to them. The poor display of tennis from the Czech frustrated her, forcing her to make errors and give up
points. Hlavackova’s tumbling performance gave an easy opportunity to the Argentine as she clinched the victory pretty easily. Ormaechea scored 49 percent on service, 59 percent on return and 55 percent of total points during the match.
In the beginning of the match Ormaechea displayed a very ordinary game and won a meagre 50 percent on her 78 percent first serves. Hlavackova on the other hand was timing the ball wonderfully, but her level dropped, and Ormaechea
figured out the idiosyncrasies of her game. From then on, the Argentine pro was in total control and converted four of five breakpoints against the Czech to clinch the first set 6-2.
The second set was forced into a tie-break as neither of the two players gave any space to the opposition and tried to dominate every single point. Ormaechea gave the first blow by pulling ahead of Hlavackova to lead 3-1 in the
tie-break before Hlavackova fought back hard to level with her. After a humongous rally of magnificent shots, Hlavackova forced the Argentine to acknowledge her skills by levelling off the tie-break at 5-5. Despite Hlavackova’s effort to force Ormaechea’s
game to falter, she was unsuccessful as Ormaechea engineered a miraculous set point with a well placed volley. In the end it was 7-5 to Ormaechea.
Up next of the Argentine is the American wild card entrant, Abigail Spears who battled past sixth seeded Oksana Kalashnikova of Georgia in the second round of the qualifying draw. It was generally not a good day for the qualifying
seeds as No.4 Anne Keothavong, No. 7 Julia Glushko, No.3 Sandra Zahlavova and No.8 Laura Siegemund followed in the Czech’s footsteps and suffered shocking second round defeats.
