Paula Ormaechea stuns Chanelle Scheepers in the opening round – Family Circle Cup 2012
Argentine 19-years-old, Paula Ormaechea, stunned the 15th seed South African, Chanelle Scheepers, with a world class performance in the opening round of the Family Circle Cup on Monday. The 120th ranked Argentine
clobbered the win in three-sets 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.
The match was played at the clay courts of Charleston; lasted an hour and 46 minutes before the qualifier dumped the seeded contestant to register an emphatic upset. More importantly for the Argentine, this performance will help
her to climb several spots in the world rankings and probably another performance like that in the second round can help her to break into the Top-100 players of the world.
World number 40 won the toss and invited her opponent to serve the first game. Both players’ swapped breakpoints at the start before the teenager registered the first successful serve hold of the match. She didn’t ease pressure
on her opponent; won another breakthrough and cruised past her with a lead of 3-1.
This stunning performance was followed by another serve hold that took the scores to 4-1 in her favour. She spared nothing at all in the following two games; winning a breakthrough for the fourth time in a row to register a resounding
first set triumph.
However, Scheepers turned the tables on her in the following set. A similar start to the second set witnessed a swap of breakpoints upfront before Scheepers clubbed the following five games on the trot to enforce the third set
into play. She won three breakthroughs and looked a completely different player on her serves.
The final set started miserably for the South African who dropped a couple of breakpoints at the start that gifted a resounding 4-0 lead to her opponent. However, she fought back into the contest; winning a breakthrough and decreasing
the trail to 4-5.
She needed to hold her serve in the 10th game to level the scores at 5-5 but her opponent’s cheeky shot selection dismantled her concentration completely and forced her to drop the deciding game of the match.
Ormaechea goes head-to-head with Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan in the next round.
