Paulie Malignaggi beats Vyacheslav Senchenko to become the WBA welterweight champion – Boxing News
Paulie ‘Magic Man’ Malignaggi had promised fans that he would beat the unbeaten WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko, and he did so. Malignaggi scored the victory via a ninth round TKO. Unfortunately, Senchenko, who was confident of winning, had
to face his career’s first ever defeat.
Right from the start, Malignaggi had control over the game. His speed and his short height gave him benefit over Senchenko, who could not get his hands on the Magic Man. The match that took place on Sunday night at the Donbass Arena had Malignaggi giving
out his best to get the job done. Senchenko did make a comeback in round four and tried to change things. For a while, it seemed like Senchenko is gaining control. By the seventh round, Senchenko had given enough beating to the Magic Man, yet could not dominate
him. On the other hand, Malignaggi’s strong jabs had created a mouse under the champion’s left eye.
Since the left eye had become Senchenko’s weakness, Malignaggi got a spot to try. He targeted the same area in the later rounds. By round eight, the eye had swollen up and Steve Smoger, referee for the match, examined it thoroughly to decide whether to keep
the fight on. The match continued with the right eye completely close, giving Senchenko disadvantage over Malignaggi’s cuts. Malignaggi ended the fight with a big right hand shot that forced the referee to end the show.
Upon hitting Ukraine, Malignaggi had claimed that this fight would be a mega-bout. He said, “I think it’s great because American fans don’t always get an opportunity like this to see fights held overseas. This is a high-level fight and not expensive pay-per-view.
My fans will be able to watch. This is a good style match-up. Fans will see what Paulie Malignaggi has left and if Senchenko is for real. No matter which way you look at it, fans can get together as a group to watch, or order it individually at home. Boxing
fans want to see world title fights and this one they’ll see me beat Senchenko.”
