Pauline Ado and Carissa Moore advance to Roxy Pro France 2011 quarterfinals
The fifth day of the latest stop of Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Tour, Roxy Pro, kicked off with Round 4 at the backup event site, La Grande Plage in Biarritz, South Africa, on Friday, July 15.
The first heat of the day saw France’s Pauline Ado prevail over her compatriot Lee Ann Curren in the one-on-one battle to advance to the quarter-finals, while removing her rival from the competition.
Hawaii’s Carissa Moore defeated Australia’s Tyler Wright in the second heat to move to the quarter-finals and bringing the Roxy Pro campaign to a premature end for her Australian rival.
With three-foot waves breaking at the event site, the stage was set for intense Round 4 sudden-death battles. Eight surfers were competing for the four quarter-final slots on offer and an exciting battle was expected.
France’s Ado went to work quite early in the first heat, catching a wave to score 5.83 points off it. However, her countrywoman Curren soon responded with a 6.17-point wave to move ahead of her on the scoreboard, making her intentions quite clear.
The 20-year-old Ado wasted no time in locking another wave and this time really went at it, throwing a series of impressive manoeuvres, to earn 7.33 points for the effort and moving to a two-wave total of 13.16 points. Curren now required a 7.00 in order
to get past her rival, but managed to get another 6.17 off her second best wave. Finishing 0.82 short of victory, she got eliminated from the competition.
The next heat turned out to be a one-man show with Hawaii’s Moore stealing the show with her outstanding performance. The ASP World No.1 was competing in her second sudden-death battle, which indicated a lack of consistency in her form currently. However,
she managed to overcome that during her heat against ASP Women’s World Tour rookie from Australia and currently ASP World No.3, Wright.
In the opening minutes of the heat, the 18-year-old Hawaiian locked a wave to score 7.67 points off it and soon added another 8.27 points to her account to move to a two-wave total of 15.94.
The score was bound to put anyone’s nerves to test and quite understandably, Wright could not keep herself from succumbing to the pressure. She collected a 4.67 and 3.30 off her two best waves in the final minutes of the heat to finish with a heat-total
of 7.97, consequently surrendering victory to her rival.
With Moore making it into the quarter-finals, she gets even closer to sealing the fate of the current season of ASP Women’s World Tour.
