Pauline Ado and Carissa Moore move into the Roxy Pro France 2011 semifinals
After a series of intense battles, the latest edition of Roxy Pro reached the crucial quarter-final on Friday, July 15, at La Grande Plage in Biarritz, South Africa.
The first quarter-final pitted France’s Pauline Ado against the in-form Brazilian, Silvana Lima, who was yet to taste defeat in the current competition. After a nail-biting contest, the French downed her rival to walk away from the heat with top honours
and advance to the semi-finals as a result.
Hawaii’s Carissa Moore took on America’s Courtney Conlogue in the second quarter-finals. Despite the consistency shown by the American surfer throughout the event, it turned out to be Moore’s turn to make a strong statement by dominating her opponent in
the heat to secure a place in the semi-finals.
After considering Lima’s performance over the last 4 days of the event and Ado’s relegation to a sudden-death round, it was quite natural to think of the 26-year-old Brazilian as the favourite to win the heat. However, Ado made it quite clear during the
quarter-final heat that she did not appreciate getting undermined.
The 20-year-old local surfer collected a 5.77 off a wave almost halfway throughout the heat and soon added an additional 5.73 to her account to move to a two-wave total of 11.50 points.
Lima put up a commendable fight and did not let Ado relax during their battle at all. Scoring 5.40 points off her first wave and only requiring 6.10 points off her second wave, she was well set to take the win. However, she only managed to earn 5.83 points
off her next wave and ended up losing the semi-final spot to her French rival by 0.27 points.
Hawaii’s Moore showed everyone why she is currently Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World No.1. While there was doubt regarding her form and consistency in the current event, she silenced the critics with her near-flawless performance to take
down the in-form American surfer, Conlogue.
As the heat kicked off, Conlogue took the early advantage by catching a wave to earn 6.00 points off it. She soon added another 6.50 points to her account to move to a two-wave total of 12.50 points.
If the 18-year-old American thought that this score would be enough to keep Moore at bay, she could not be more mistaken. In fact, there was nothing that could have kept the 18-year-old Hawaiian at bay during the heat. She went on a rampage and unleashed
some of the most impressive and stylish manoeuvres to collect a 9.17 and 8.17 off her two best waves in the final stages of the heat to finish with a heat-total of 17.34 points, the highest in the event so far.
