Paulo Ferreira looks forward to more trophies
Chelsea have dominated England since Roman Abramovich took over and brought in the Special One, Jose Mourinho. And last season, under boss Carlo Ancelotti, the Blues won their first ever double, the English Premier League and the FA Cup.
Most of the players, who won the back to back title in 2005 and 2006, are still an essential part of the current squad. One such player is Paulo Ferreira, the Portuguese right back.
The recently retired Portuguese international has been with Chelsea since Mourinho arrived, in fact it was Mourinho, who brought his fellow Portuguese to London. Though Mourinho left, Ferreira stayed and has enjoyed great success at the Bridge, winning silverware
and dominating domestically.
The one trophy Ferreira has not yet won at Chelsea is the Champions League, because it is the one trophy the Blues have yet to claim.
Ancelotti’s side have had a flying start to this season, the Blues are already four points clear at the top. They have left all competition behind, only losing one game this entire season. Ferreira recently retired from the national team and said that he
wished to win more silverware before he retires from football altogether. Ferreira revealed while talking to reporters that he was enjoying himself this season and hoped to carry on his good form.
He said, “My first ambition is to keep winning until the end of my career if possible. I am still in a big club with ambition and I have ambitions as well. I want to win titles until the end and I'll try to do this. This season I am enjoying it a lot, working
hard and always ready to play if the manager wants. I've had chances to play and given 100 per cent and tried to help the team”.
Chelsea’s next challenge is the fixture against Aston Villa on Saturday. The Blues will be looking to extend their lead with a comfortable win over the weekend.
However, with the number of injuries, a comfortable victory might not really be possible. John Terry and Alex, the first choice centre backs are out with injuries and are unlikely to feature over the weekend, even though Terry is known for recovering at
the last minute before an important fixture.
Captain John Terry may still make an appearance, but Alex’s unavailability is confirmed and Ancelotti will know that his defense is stretched to the limit. That will only put more pressure on the right and left flanks at the back, this will also mean Michael
Essien, the holding midfielder will have to play more defensively than usual.
The back four is not the only area where Ancelotti is facing problems; the midfield seems depleted at the moment too.
Frank Lampard has been ruled out for a further two weeks following a groin strain, the England international was set to make his return this weekend but will have to wait longer now. Yossi Benayoun is also out; the Israeli international suffered an Achilles
tear while on international duty. Even with a quick recovery, the former Liverpool player is out for at least six months, which means the Blues will have to make do without his services for the rest of the season.
Steve Sidwell, Aston Villa midfielder and former Chelsea player, said while talking to reporters that he was looking forward to the fixture. He said, “At home the fans are great, especially against the big teams. They really do get behind the player, which
is really important because sometimes when it's 0-0, or if you're 1-0 down, when you need that extra push; it does come from the fans. You do sense that on the pitch. It does drive you on more”.
