Pavin and Colin confused over wild cards
The golf season is an interconnected chain of events where the results finally come out at the end. Throughout the season, a similar trend is noticed - one tournament finishes and another starts off and this continues till the end of the season when the Ryder Cup finally arrives.
Each and every victory during the PGA tour leads to the selection of the Ryder Cup team from American and Europe. For winners like Martin Kaymer and Bubba Watson, it’s more than selection; it’s a life changing experience.
Quite similarly, the reward for out-class performances delivered last week at the Whistling Straits is a lavish Ryder Cup trip of 49 days to Wales. It will be here that the players will learn the meaning of working in a team.
Players who will experience these moments include Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Hunter Mahan, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Jeff Overton and Matt Kuchar. Other than these eight players, four more players will be chosen as wild card picks by Corey Pavin on the 7th of September. While talking about the captain’s pick, the first name that comes to mind is Tiger Woods. This number 1 player is not on the team despite being at the top of the OWGR.
However, as he did not qualify for the FEDEX points, therefore he is in trouble. Woods required a finish in the top 5 at the USPGA Championship. But unfortunately for him, Tiger shot a 73 and stopped at the 28th spot which was not acceptable by the selection team. However, there is one man who can choose him but even he is confused.
For Corey Pavin, it is the biggest decision of his career as a captain. Everyone is advising him not to opt for Tiger Woods including Paul Azinger; the captain of the winning team of 2008 who recently gave an interview on a local radio station where he advised Pavin that Tiger Woods will only be a liability in the team. At the same time, Colin Montgomerie the captain of the European Ryder cup team has a different point of view. He believes that tiger Woods will be a source of tremendous attraction hence he should be chosen despite his poor game.
Moreover, there was a fight between Jim Gray and Corey Pavin regarding the same issue. Corey Pavin accused the journalist of submitting fake news regarding the selection of Tiger Woods on the team. Jim Gray subjected against this allegation and both got into a hot argument in the media centre at the Whistling straits.
U.S. Ryder Cup captain is not alone in this turmoil. Colin Montgomerie is a part of the same problem as he too has to make wild card picks. According to analysts, if Colin chooses one of the Molinari brothers, then he should take both of them as they will play better as a team. Secondly, what about Padraig Harrington, Justin Rose and Paul Casey who seem to be equal on the weighing scale?
To wrap it up be, the U.S. and European Ryder Cup team captains are stuck in a dilemma. Both players need to decide which player to keep and which ones to ignore. This issue will get solved and the golf lovers will once again see a spectacular game on their TV sets or at the course with their friends and family. The first three days of October will be a blast in Celtic Manor with the world’s finest players working together in a team, representing their countries.
