Some people say MMA is overtaking Boxing. And once again, tomorrow night, the MMA folks are going head to head with a boxing promotion. Predictions? Which event will generate higher ratings/ppv purchases?

  1. I am a huge fan of both boxing and MMA. I practice Muay Thai which is half boxing. Im just an avid fan of both no preference really. MMA is the the upcoming most popular sport though. It is where Nascar was a few years back. UFC and Dana White are already well known household names. A boxing PPV/Card/Event doesnt have a chance nowadays unless it has some huge names headlining. Which is the case with this weekend. Pavlik/Taylor should draw more viewers over Showtime's Elite XTC or whatever the organization is for it is a rematch and the names are more popular to sport fans than Kimbo and Tank. The guy above me is crazy and shows much ignorance to think that MMA is for scissies or whatever. A good boxer will tap-out or get tko'd by the average mma fighter. Hence you never see them crossing over. Except for Ray Mercer and we saw what Kimbo did to him. I will be watching both events though. Thank god for DVR.

  2. Take a look at http://www.fightjunkie.com/predictions for a read on the fight. I think the Pavlik/Taylor fight is a better match than the Slice/Abbott

  3. usually the ufc PPV beats the boxing PPV but they have about 4 to 5 big names included where most of the time boxing will only have one big name, but this time they messed up because you have too great warriors fighting to see whos better in time when everyone seems to be ducking everyone .... In mexican terms theres is no losers in this fight because its about pride and there is no greater honor to fight for ..... I truly believe this is goin to be a great fight and I am excited about this fight and  a Mexican isnt involved... that being said i think its going to Kill on PPV buys and beat the pansy a s s UFC q****s....... i got Pavlik 6th Round KO but think we might see a Legendary fight

  4. Boxing just isn't very exciting anymore.  MMA is newer and appeals to the younger crowd of people. I'm saying that the MMA will generate higher ppv numbers.

  5. The boxing match will do better, but not because boxing is more popular

The Pavlik/Taylor fight is a title match, a rematch, and their two big names

The abbott/slice match is a wash-out and a newcomer, that really serves meaning, and is on a lower tier promotion

If the brock lesnar fight, chuck liddell, or tito ortiz were fighting this weekend, different story

  6. Definitely more money will be generated from the Pavlik Taylor rematch. The other fight will be buried because of it. But Showtime in general usually pales in comparison to HBO boxing. I will definitely catch the replay of the Tank Abbott and Kimbo Slice match but there is no urgency or any elite status between either of them. Tank is easily winded and Kimbo is still a novice to the intricacies of MMA so it may or may not meet expectations. Pavlik and Taylor were the fight of the year in a lot of people's minds and no boxing fan is going to want to miss the rematch.

My pick is Pavlik KO's Taylor in 6 and makes 12 times as much revenue as the other fight. Kimbo beats Tank in 2 rds but will probably be posted on youtube before the other fight.

  7. First off, Detroit sports guy, it is not a title fight. However, you are correct that more people will be interested in watching Kelly wipe the ring with Taylor. Go Kelly!!!!

  8. Pavlik/Taylor, the other one is a joke!

  9. I honestly can't see why there isn't room for both Boxing and MMA I can't see why one should replace the other.  That said Pavlik/Taylor is huge, the middleweight championship of the world is an event.  Tank and Slice is an entertaining brawl, but realistically there is no comparison.  It's like the difference between Fillet Mignon and a White-castle hamburger.  They both have their place.

  11. it depends on what people like to watch these days

some people may like to watch two of the top boxers in the game

and some people may want to watch two street fighter going at it because thats what kimbo and tank are they are both street fighters and no i am not having a dig at mma as i am a fan of the ufc but lets face it if any of these two was to fight one of the top guys in the ufc or pride they would get KO in the first round

and as for mma taking over boxing thats bull-sh*t you tell me if you would get a crowd like the hatton vs mayweather did just for the weigh-in

and just wondering when the ufc comes over to the uk do any of the american fans come over to watch it or do any english fans go over to america to watch it over there the way boxing fans do you may get 1 or 2 but you wont get a few thousand the way boxing will

  12. This particular MMA match has a circus like atmosphere, and Pavlik/Taylor proves to be exciting and will last more than 5 minutes, although Pay Per View is a stretch for this fight.

  13. MMA is not overtaking boxing thats just stupid.  They are different sports that can exist with no conflict with one another.  You have a tough question.  I think that the fact the MMA card is on Showtime for free it will do well.  But I would still say that the Pavlik fight will have more viewers and it will make more money for sure.

  14. Abbott vs Slice will be an entertaining fight. Pavlik vs Taylor will be an easy fight for Pavlik.

  15. pavlik/taylor will do better money numbers, the MMA will do more buys probably.  MA will never over take boxing.  i have nothing against it, but it's just a fad that will fizzle out in 10 years.  UFC definately does appeal to american's short attention span.  most americans are bored by boxing just because it isnt fast enough for them.  we want to see the fast knockout, and UFC provides that.

  16. Boxing will win on this card, will be a great but predictable(in my view)fight,a real treat for boxing despite the politics!!
