Pavlik wants to fight on Pacquiao-Margarito undercard
The prime slots in the upcoming bout between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito, scheduled for 13 November, are quickly being filled as Kelly Pavlik has announced himself a willing participant.
The former middleweight champion hopes to be fighting on the HBO PPV event at Cowboys Stadium, which looks to draw 70,000 fans for the night.
Pavlik lost his title in April to Sergio Martinez. He suffered a cut over his left eye in the first round of the fight, and was kept at bay by Martinez, who showcased magnificent technical skills and managed to make Pavlik fight his fight.
Top Rank Promotions and Pavlik’s manager, Cameron Dunkin, have been analyzing prospective opponents and looking to secure an arrangement.
Dunkin confirmed that Pavlik was excited to fight again, and that the idea of doing it on a Pacquiao-Margarito undercard appealed to him significantly.
The bout will take place at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas. Owner Jerry Jones was sought out by Top Rank chief Bob Arum to secure the location, after a fight between Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey back in March attracted some 50,000 fans to the same venue.
"I want to go over things with Kelly," Dunkin stated. "We kinda know the money, but I'm supposed to get a contract and we're going over the names. But Kelly is willing to fight on the card. The bottom line is I have to say to him, ‘This is who you are fighting, this is what you are making.' He really wants to do it. He'd love to go to Dallas. He thinks it's really neat down there and he loves the stadium and he loves [Cowboys owner] Jerry Jones.”
Dunkin continued: “To go to Dallas with the Cowboys and Jerry Jones and fight at that stadium and get that kind of exposure with the best fighter in the world in front of that crowd? He wants that. [...] But I want him happy and ready to come back. I want boxing to be fun again for him."
