Pavlos Kontides happy with silver medal in 2012 London Olympic Games – Sailing Update
Weather conditions on the Weymouth and Portland racing area were quite supportive for the participants as they gave complete freedom to sail. A tremendous 16-knot wind allowed the sailors to compete with the best of their skills and earn a strong position
in the regatta.
Pavlos Kontides of Cyprus sailed convincingly throughout the regatta and managed to cling to the second podium finish with 59 points. During his regatta voyage, he could claim only two bullet positions while in the others he made it to the lower podium places
which brought him on the second position.
He started off a bit slow and at the end of Day 1, he was trailing but he bounced back in the second day proceedings and clinched a couple of higher finishes to go up in the standings. However, the final day was not an ideal finish for him bit still he is
quite satisfied with his performance.
Speaking to the local media, Kontides said, “I guess back home they are waiting for me and when I get back there it will be huge celebrations. I still didn't understand how an huge achievement this is for my country, the first ever Olympic medal but I guess
when I have it over my neck and when I am back home with my compatriots then I will really understand what's going on.”
Former five-time World Champion, Australia’s Tom Slingsby sailed up to the mark in the Laser fleet of the 2012 London Olympic Games sailing competitions and was able to claim the gold medal after compiling 43 points.
The Laser fleet took part in 11 races to formulate the final results, including a discard race. Slingsby started his regatta campaign with a brilliant 2 1 2 combination and finished the regatta in style clinching two bullets on the final day of the event.
