Pay a Debt or Get a place to stay?

My friend Has $3000. And she owes a former boss $2315 on a Loan. the original loan was to be paid in full for $2900, however she was not able to pay in full due to extenuating circumstances. She has paid the loan down to the $2315. the dilemma is that my friend is homeless with a child living pillow to post. She intends to pay back every cent to her former boss. Should she try to pay some of the loan and use the rest to get a new place? How much would be a reasonable amount to appease the debt in order to have enough to move? If she doesn't pay the loan back right away isn't that unethical? We live in So California where a move would cost all that she has. What amount would be the least amount to show good faith that she indeed plans to pay down the debt? This is a serious matter so please be as helpful as possible. She wants to do the best thing for her and maintain good character.

  1. I would pay the ex boss something like $200-$300 right now. It is very noble for her to want to pay back her boss, but her living situation is number 1 especially with a baby. She needs to get her basic needs met before paying an old debt.

  2. OK, of course she needs a place to stay.  A baby too?  Yes get the place to stay.. She needs to get on low income housing.
