Question:

Pay extra for hair experts, or risk a salon you're not familiar with?

I'm torn between two options for my wedding. I'm having a destination wedding and I can't decide if I should go with a hair/make-up service that is very reputable in the area (they come to your hotel room), which is pretty pricey but has many, great testimonials and references, or risk going to a salon that I don't know much about, and that doesn't have very many testimonials or reviews online. I would, of course, be doing trials with any place I pick, but I was just wondering what others have done, and what their experiences have been. I'm leaning more toward the pricer service just because I will be doing an updo, and I have extremely thick, silky hair that's hard to work with. Also, none of the other bridesmaids will be having their own hair or make-up done, just me.

Thanks in advance!

  1. This is a tough one! I understand you're reasons for not trusting the less expensive one, of all the days to have a bad hair day your wedding is not one of them! Personally, I'd go ahead and spend the extra money and go with the more expensive one. That way you don't have to worry about trying to make it to an appointment.

  2. Price doesn't always mean better.  It's hard to say.

I went with an inexpensive one that turned out GREAT!  it was only 25 bucks!

My MOH went to a pricey salon cuz she didn't trust the cheap one.  She ended up in tears and showed up at the cheap salon and they fixed up her hair for her.

  3. If you are the only one getting her hair done go with the one with the best reputation. You don't want to be stressing about hair on your special day.

  4. If its only you getting it done. Go ahead and go with the more expensive one. You said your hair is difficult. So just to be sure everything runs smoothly on your wedding day go with the pricey one.

  5. Like other people have pointed out cost doesn't necessarily mean a better  product. Years ago my friend's sister came back from getting her hair done for prom and she hated it, she also spent $100 on it (which would be more in today's world). My friend and I quick redid it for free and she loved it.

Okay, that story shared, my friend had the hair people that came to the hotel room and I loved it! We go to drink champagne as they did our hair, talk, and really just enjoy it. That would have been worth the extra cost right there. Also I felt that we were treated with a little more respect because they were "on our turf."

  6. If you feel like you have to have it done, I'd go with the one with lots of testimonials and the better rep.

I did my hair and make-up myself and saved a ton.

  7. set appointments and trials with both, the salon being the first trial.  If it goes well save the money and cancel with the other place.

If you aren't happy cancel the appointment there and go with the other option.
