Question:

Pay for babysitting?

I live in the NY area and I pay my babysitter $125 a week.

She often list out the things she does in the day for my son. If she feeds him before I get there she will say "I fed him for you" or if she wipe him down with his wipes she will mention that too.

I buy things for her sometims such as milk, cereal and items that are hard to get from the carribean (Jamaica). I have family members ship it to me for her. She likes wigs and I buy her a few sometimes.

Is she hinting around that she wants a little bit more pay?

  1. Thats a good amont you are paying your babysitter, How well do you know your babysitter?

  2. yeah!!

    moral of the story..

    GET A LOCAL BABY SITTER!

    lol (ignore the caps)

    :p

  3. I don't think she is trying, I think she is just trying to be informative.  Lots of mothers would want details of everything that was done so they know their son is in good hands and they know that he doesn't need fed or wiped etc.

It's wonderful that you get items from home for her, she is surely just appreciative of what you do and wanting to do a great job for you!

  4. Well I'm a babysitter expert. I think you should pay her at least $25 more. But only depending on how many hours she works. and if you buy her some things i don't think she should ask for more money. $125 a week should be enough  depending on her age. i babysit many  kids.  i charge $20 an hour for people who can afford it. but if they cant afford it i charge like people who don't get payed so well i charge them $20 for the whole day. and not $20 an hour. so if you think so give her an extra $25 depending how long she babysits and you should just ask her.

  5. Your first paragraph makes it look like she watches your child while you work. If that is so and you work full time, you need to pay her triple what she is getting now. Or at the very absolute least, double that amount. Where the heck can you find a babysitter for only $125 a week in NY?

  6. yeah i think she is hinting you she wants a little more money, because she wouldn't be just wasting her time and feeding your baby for you and point out a little stuff.she could just keep it to herself, but she is pretty much telling you she wants more pay. but i think that you already pay her pretty much for buying her wigs, so stop buying her wigs and pay her more, or keep buying her wigs and don't pay her any more than she already gets payed. and wigs are pretty expensive anyways...

well i hope you choose the best desicion

  7. Talk to her about it. There's no better way than to ask.

If you're willing to give her a raise, talk to her after she babysits one day and ask her if she thinks 125 a week is fair?

Don't offer a huge outrageous price youre not willing to pay, but if she thinks she needs a raise, give her what you can afford. Just don't be afraid to ask her, because chances are she's probably afraid to ask you and doesn't want to sound rude.

  8. is she a full time caregiver? If so, you need to pay her a living wage. 125$ a week is hardly enough for anyone to live in NY area. You should be paying her enough that she can buy her own wigs rather then buying things for her -- one way is she's getting it for herself (she earned it ) the other way is patronizing - you hand out what she needs

Just talk to her directly about what her lifestyle is like, and you can assess if she needs more money. If she is a quality caregiver, and takes good care of your son, then you should value her contribution.

  9. You didn't mention how many hours a week she works.  I think at least $10 an hour sounds fair.  You are also going out of your way to get her other items.  I think she is just letting you know that she is taking care of your son.  Sounds like a very detailed and caring woman.

  10. It sounds to me that she is just being a good babysitter and informing you about your son. She might be telling you she fed him so you don't feed him again.

If you think she deserves more money, give her a raise.
