Paying at a restaurant with card? Tipping?

So I was always wondering, how do u pay for a meal at a restaurant (ex. chiles, tgi friday) with a card?

Im going to a friends party and i assume were getting separate checks, but I'm not sure how to pay with my VISA debit card

Somebody told me that when u get the check, u just put your card in the envelope thingy and then the waiter takes it, charges it, and then brings it back with a slip where you write the tip. If thats what I do, how will the tip be charged on my card? (considering that the card was charged once for my meal, without the tip)

  1. You put the card in the envelope and then takes the card back and gets an authorization.  An authorization means they check to make sure the card is valid and that you would have money in the account or the credit available to pay the bill.  Then the server brings back a receipt with a blank space for a tip and a blank space to total the tip with the bill.  Then you sign it.  Then either the server or someone else takes the information from what you signed and puts the charge through.

  2. i assume the will just bill the amount of the tip but if u are unsure of how to bill the tip then just pay for ur meal and give the waiter the tip separately with cash

  3. IF you are with a party of multiple people and want a seperate check YOU CAN ASK FOR IT.

Or If not, and you still want to pay for just your portion tell the waitress to charge your card for your meal and then everyone else does the same.

Either way , she will return the tab to you with a receipt and it asks you to sign it. Now you have to write down the total you want to pay and it asks you if you'd like to include tip.

So you can either pay just the total or add and write down an ever greater total to include tip.

Then they will charge it .

  4. The restaurant will keep one copy of your receipt with your written tip on it, they give the other copy to you.  At the end of the night, they have to reconcile the receipts (which all have an order number on them) with the bank/company that provided them with the machine.  Therefore whatever tip you write on your receipt is what the server will get and you get debited your bill, tax, AND tip.

I used to have to do these nightly reconciliations myself.

  5. whatever the price is for example $65 and you want to give a $5 tip then just put $70 its not hard
